Conductivity (EC/PPM/TDS) probe - Care/maintenance

EC readings off? Low ppm reading? EC results when testing in 2.77 solution lower than you expected? Er error message occurring when a calibration is attempted on your Conductivity Pen? Sounds like some regular cleaning and maintenance is needed! 

Conductivity probes generally require less maintenance than pH probes - however, these probes are not invincible and do require some love from time to time, or the result is a low conductivity reading.

Regular cleaning and checking is important to ensure your meter is still operating correctly.


Accuracy - it is highly suggested that you test your Bluelab conductivity probe regularly to ensure accuracy of your conductivity instrument. For this testing, Bluelab 2.77EC Standard Solution is required - basically all that is needed is to test this solution and see what reading your instrument gives you.

  • If the reading is at 2.7EC or 2.8EC, this is correct and so proves that your conductivity probe is clean and working accurately. If the reading is lower than this, it indicates your probe is dirty and requires cleaning. For readings higher than this it is likely your solution is contaminated, so try testing again using fresh Bluelab 2.77EC Standard Solution.


Cleaning - if your meter is reading erratically or showing you readings lower than you'd expect, the probe face may have a build up of salts on it which is blocking the probe sensors. To resolve this, follow the cleaning instructions provided with your meter. Bluelab conductivity probe cleaner is required and some fresh running tap water.

  • Remove the shroud of the probe, place some cleaner onto the probe face, then scrub the probe face using your finger or the cleaning tool (chamois) provided in our Bluelab conductivity probe care kits. Rinse under fresh water and re-attach your shroud.
  • Re-test the Bluelab 2.77EC solution after cleaning to confirm the probe has been cleaned successfully.
