How to clean Bluelab conductivity (EC/PPM) probes

Clean conductivity heads regularly to ensure accurate readings

Regular care and maintenance of your Bluelab conductivity probes is important to ensure accurate readings. Salts and organic oils can build up on the probe blocking the sensors, so  if your EC or ppm readings seem incorrect, are fluctuating, or you have an error message on your Conductivity Pen, it's likely your probe needs some care and cleaning.

Check and clean your pen once a month for best results.

To ensure proper cleaning, use the Bluelab Probe Care kit (or use an unscented crème cleaner).

Steps to clean the Bluelab conductivity

1: Remove shroud

For the Bluelab Truncheon, twist the shroud 90 degrees and remove.

For all Bluelab conductivity probes and the Bluelab Commercial Truncheon, warm the shroud in your hand for a few seconds to help with removal. Hold the body and gently pull the shroud off.

2: Clean probe face

Place 1 or 2 drops of Conductivity Probe Cleaner on the probe face. Rub firmly with a Bluelab Chamois.

3: Rinse the probe face

Rinse off all traces of cleaner under running tap water while scrubbing the probe face with the Bluelab Chamois.

4: Check that the water forms a film

There should be no beads of water on the probe face. If beading is present repeat steps 2 and 3.

5: Refit the shroud and test

Test in 2.77 EC Conductivity Standard Solution to ensure cleaning was adequate. Place the probe in the solution and wait for the reading to stabilise to a consistent value.

This can take a few minutes while the probe adjusts to the temperature of the solution.

If the reading is not within 0.1EC/1CF of 2.8EC follow steps 2 to 4 again until the test falls within range.

Note: The shroud must be left on the probe when taking readings.
